Highgate’s fourth Giving Day is a great opportunity for everyone to get involved and make a gift, whatever the size, to make an impact on bright young people.
Our partnership school, the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham (LAET), provides free, transformational 6th form education to bright young pupils in Tottenham. 50% of LAET students come from households described as in “struggling estates” or “difficult
circumstances” using the ACORN tool for socio-economic analysis.
After government funding, LAET still needs £1,800 per pupil per year to provide life-changing education and opportunities to the disadvantaged people in their borough. This funding or the ‘LAET premium’ as we like to call it, is used towards things like smaller class sizes, offering a wide and varied curriculum and co-curricular options, as well as receive much needed support with university admissions, and things like mental health provision.
LAET ranks in the top 2% of schools in the country for admissions to top universities. Data published in 2023 showed that, thanks to LAET, 24% of students from the wider Tottenham area won places at Russell Group universities, compared with 5% prior to LAET’s opening. Not only does LAET provide transformative educational opportunities in the classroom, but they also give their pupils experiences such as going to New York to attend the Concordia Summit.
Highgate’s partnership with LAET enables unique educational opportunities and lasting connections between like-minded young people, regardless of their social or economic backgrounds. Some of the events that show this partnership are the Highgate Careers Fair, the Young Musician Competition, and recently, participating together in the MetGirlz project.
